Conservation & Planning
BBNC has led the organized opposition to the controversial Pebble Mine Project for more than a decade, thereby protecting the region’s most valuable natural resource—the Bristol Bay wild salmon fishery—from a real threat.
BBNC formally adopted a Fish First corporate policy that guides its evaluation of BBNC’s corporate activities and investments.
BBNC evaluates resource development projects and only supports those projects that enhance subsistence activities, and protect clean water and healthy fish populations.
BBNC is currently formalizing its position and policies on the environment, energy and sustainability. Subsidiaries continue their commitment to the environment in sustainable construction and through the ultimate creation of a sector of business dedicated to energy.
BBNC hosts Alaska Wild Salmon Day each year as celebration of our most important natural resource and as a demonstration of our commitment to sustaining it.
Carbon Free Energy
After announcing a partnership in June 2021 with the National Hockey League’s newest franchise, the Seattle Kraken, BBNC has signed on to continue its plight for shareholders and the region at large to pursue a more sustainable Alaska and will represent Bristol Bay throughout the Climate Pledge Arena.
Partnering with Amazon (and other major founding partners, Coors Light, Alaska Airlines, Verizon, and InfoSys), the Climate Pledge Arena serves as a reminder of the urgent need for climate action. The pledge itself stands for reaching net zero carbon by 2040, 10 years earlier than the Paris Agreement goal. To date, 114 businesses have signed on in support of this aim.
Renewable Energy Generation
BBNC worked with the Nushagak Cooperative in Dillingham for a potential renewable energy project within Bristol Bay.
BBNC also offered assistance and consulting on the in-river hydrokinetic generator project in Igiugig.
BBNC completed nine multi-year studies on the feasibility of wind and hydroelectric power in eight communities in the Bristol Bay region, engaging the Alaska Energy Authority, Alaska Village Electric Cooperative, Nushagak Electric Cooperative (NEC), Naknek Electric Association (NEA), and several individual village utilities in the region.
A senior executive from BBNC pioneered renewable energy projects in Alaska and led energy investment, development and asset management across renewable and alternative energy technology types across 1.5 million acres of Alaska Native corporation land. This executive discussed in an Energy Committee hearing how rural Alaskan communities were transitioning to cleaner energy sources and reducing costs, creating a more sustainable life for its constituents. He now leads the way to develop a widespread environment, social impact and governance (ESG) plan in service to its primary goal to represent its native members, preserve the native way of life and support progress and development in the region.
Empowering communities
We are here to protect the land in the Bristol Bay region, celebrate the legacy of its people, and enhance the lives of BBNC shareholders.
